Authorship Criteria

Authorship Criteria

1. General Principles of Authorship

Jurnal Borneo Humaniora recognizes authorship as an important academic responsibility that reflects an individual's substantial intellectual contribution to scholarly work. Authorship must be based on meaningful contributions to the research and manuscript, rather than solely on academic position, institutional affiliation, seniority, or financial support.

All authors listed in a submitted manuscript must have made substantial scholarly contributions, approved the final version of the manuscript, and agreed to be accountable for the integrity and accuracy of the work.

The journal is committed to ensuring fair, transparent, and ethical authorship practices in accordance with recognized standards of research integrity and publication ethics.

2. Criteria for Authorship

To qualify for authorship in Jurnal Borneo Humaniora, an individual must satisfy all of the following criteria:

  1. Substantial contribution: The individual must have made a substantial contribution to at least one of the following: the conception or design of the study; the collection, analysis, or interpretation of data; the development of theoretical arguments or conceptual frameworks; or another significant intellectual aspect of the research.

  2. Drafting or critical revision: The individual must have participated in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.

  3. Final approval: The individual must have reviewed and approved the final version of the manuscript submitted for publication.

  4. Accountability: The individual must agree to take responsibility for their own contributions and cooperate in ensuring that questions concerning the accuracy, integrity, or reliability of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All four criteria must be met for an individual to be listed as an author.

3. Contributions That Do Not Automatically Qualify for Authorship

The following contributions, when provided independently without meeting all authorship criteria, do not automatically qualify an individual for authorship:

  • Providing funding, research facilities, or administrative support.

  • Holding a supervisory, managerial, or leadership position.

  • Providing general advice, routine technical assistance, or data collection support without substantial intellectual contribution.

  • Providing language editing, proofreading, formatting, or other editorial assistance.

  • Having a senior academic position or belonging to the same institution as the authors.

Individuals who have made valuable contributions but do not meet the authorship criteria should be acknowledged appropriately, with their consent, in the acknowledgments section of the manuscript.

Honorary, guest, gift, and ghost authorship are unacceptable. Individuals must not be included as authors solely because of their position, influence, or relationship with the research team. Conversely, individuals who meet the authorship criteria must not be omitted from the author list.

4. Corresponding Author Responsibilities

The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the authors and the editorial team throughout submission, peer review, revision, and publication.

The corresponding author is responsible for:

  1. Ensuring that all authors meet the journal's authorship criteria.

  2. Confirming that all authors have reviewed and approved the submitted manuscript and agreed to its submission.

  3. Providing accurate author names, affiliations, email addresses, and other required metadata.

  4. Ensuring that author contributions, acknowledgments, funding information, and conflicts of interest are accurately disclosed where applicable.

  5. Coordinating communication with all co-authors regarding editorial decisions, reviewer comments, and manuscript revisions.

  6. Ensuring that all co-authors approve the final version before publication.

  7. Communicating any necessary corrections or concerns about the integrity of the manuscript to the editorial team.

The corresponding author must not make decisions about authorship or manuscript revisions on behalf of other authors without their knowledge and agreement.

5. Author Order and Contribution Statements

The order of authors should reflect the relative scholarly contributions agreed upon by the research team. The authors must determine their order before submission and ensure that every listed author agrees with the final arrangement.

Where appropriate, authors are encouraged to provide an author contribution statement describing each author's role in the research and manuscript preparation.

The journal may request additional information to clarify individual contributions when questions arise concerning authorship or research integrity.

Author contribution statements must be accurate and must not exaggerate or misrepresent any individual's role.

6. Changes in Authorship

Any request to add, remove, or reorder authors after manuscript submission must be justified in writing and submitted to the editorial team by the corresponding author.

The request must include:

  • A clear explanation of the reason for the proposed change.

  • Confirmation that all existing authors have agreed to the change.

  • Written consent from any author being added or removed, where applicable.

  • Confirmation that all affected authors approve the revised author order and contribution statements.

The editor will assess the request before making a decision. Changes to authorship must not be made unilaterally by any author.

If a dispute arises concerning authorship, the editorial team may suspend the editorial process while requesting clarification or appropriate institutional assistance. The journal will not determine disputed contributions solely on the basis of academic rank or institutional authority.

7. Acknowledgment of Contributors

Individuals who have contributed to the research but do not satisfy all authorship criteria may be acknowledged in a separate acknowledgments section, subject to their consent.

Such contributions may include administrative assistance, technical support, language editing, access to research facilities, or other forms of assistance that do not meet the journal's authorship requirements.

Authors should ensure that acknowledgments accurately describe the contributions received and do not imply authorship where the criteria have not been met.

8. Use of Artificial Intelligence and Automated Tools

Artificial intelligence tools and other automated technologies cannot be listed as authors because they cannot assume the responsibilities and accountability required of human authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical acceptability of all content submitted to the journal, including content generated or assisted by artificial intelligence tools.

Where required by the journal's applicable AI policy, authors must disclose the use of such tools in manuscript preparation, analysis, or other relevant activities. AI-assisted work must be checked carefully for factual accuracy, appropriate attribution, fabricated references, plagiarism, and potential confidentiality or privacy violations.

The use of AI tools does not replace the intellectual contribution and accountability required for authorship.

9. Authorship Disputes and Ethical Concerns

Jurnal Borneo Humaniora expects all authors to resolve authorship matters transparently and in good faith before submitting a manuscript.

Allegations of inappropriate authorship, omitted contributors, honorary authorship, fabricated contributions, or unauthorized changes to the author list will be assessed by the editorial team in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

Depending on the circumstances, the journal may request written explanations, supporting documentation, or clarification from the relevant institution. Editorial processing may be suspended while the matter is investigated.

Where a breach of publication ethics is established, the journal may take appropriate action, including rejecting the manuscript, correcting the published record, or taking further action in accordance with its applicable policies.

10. Declaration of Authorship

By submitting a manuscript to Jurnal Borneo Humaniora, the corresponding author confirms that all listed authors meet the journal's authorship criteria, have approved the submitted version, and agree to be accountable for their respective contributions.

All authors are expected to comply with the journal's publication ethics, authorship requirements, and editorial policies.

The journal reserves the right to request additional authorship declarations or contribution statements when necessary to ensure transparency, accountability, and the integrity of the scholarly record.
