Artificial Intelligence Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

1. Policy Statement

Jurnal Borneo Humaniora recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, can support scholarly research and manuscript preparation. The journal permits the responsible use of these technologies, provided that their use does not compromise research integrity, originality, transparency, confidentiality, or publication ethics.

AI tools must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution, critical thinking, scholarly judgment, or responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of their work.

This policy applies to authors, editors, reviewers, and other parties involved in the submission, evaluation, and publication of manuscripts in Jurnal Borneo Humaniora.

2. Permitted Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI tools to support manuscript preparation and research activities, provided that the use is appropriate, transparent where required, and subject to human oversight.

Permitted uses may include:

  • Improving language, grammar, readability, and sentence structure.

  • Organizing ideas and assisting with manuscript outlining.

  • Supporting preliminary literature exploration and identifying potentially relevant sources.

  • Assisting with data processing, statistical analysis, coding, or other research tasks when scientifically appropriate.

  • Developing preliminary visualizations, diagrams, or illustrations, subject to applicable copyright, attribution, and image-disclosure requirements.

Authors must critically evaluate all AI-generated or AI-assisted outputs before incorporating them into a manuscript. AI-generated content must not be accepted without verification, particularly where it concerns facts, research findings, interpretations, quotations, citations, or references.

AI tools must not be used to fabricate or manipulate research data, generate misleading evidence, conceal plagiarism, misrepresent research procedures, or produce deceptive scholarly content.

3. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies when these tools contribute to the preparation or substantive content of a submitted manuscript.

The disclosure should identify:

  1. The name of the AI tool or service used.

  2. The purpose for which the tool was used.

  3. The relevant part or activity of the manuscript preparation process.

  4. The authors' responsibility for reviewing and verifying the resulting content.

Basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks that do not substantively alter the manuscript do not require a separate disclosure.

If AI tools are used as part of the research methodology, including research design, data processing, data analysis, or interpretation, their use must be described in the Methods section or another appropriate section. The description should provide sufficient information about the tool and its role to support transparency and reproducibility.

If AI tools are used to generate or materially alter figures, illustrations, or other visual materials, the authors must disclose this use in the relevant figure caption or accompanying description, where applicable. Authors must also ensure compliance with copyright, image integrity, and other applicable ethical requirements.

4. Recommended AI Declaration Statement

Authors who have used generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in preparing their manuscripts should include a declaration before the References section.

The following format is recommended:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Manuscript Preparation Process

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool or service] for [specific purpose]. The author(s) reviewed and verified the generated output, made the necessary revisions, and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the manuscript."

Authors should modify this statement to accurately reflect their actual use of AI. If no declaration is required because only basic spelling, grammar, or punctuation checks were performed, no statement is necessary solely for that purpose.

5. AI Tools Cannot Be Listed as Authors

AI tools, chatbots, and other AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to Jurnal Borneo Humaniora.

Authorship requires intellectual contribution, accountability, approval of the final manuscript, and the ability to respond to questions concerning the integrity of the work. These responsibilities must be fulfilled by human authors.

All listed authors remain responsible for the entire manuscript, including any material generated or modified with AI assistance. Authors must ensure that the submitted work represents a genuine scholarly contribution and that all sources and claims are appropriately verified and acknowledged.

6. Accuracy, Originality, and Research Integrity

Authors are responsible for checking all AI-generated material before submission. Particular attention must be given to:

  • The accuracy of factual statements and research interpretations.

  • The authenticity and relevance of citations and references.

  • The validity of calculations, statistical results, and methodological descriptions.

  • Potential bias, misleading statements, or unsupported conclusions.

  • Plagiarism, copyright infringement, and unauthorized use of third-party material.

  • The originality and authenticity of the authors' scholarly contribution.

AI-generated references, quotations, and bibliographic details must be independently verified against reliable sources. The use of AI does not excuse inaccurate citations, fabricated evidence, plagiarism, or other violations of research and publication ethics.

The journal may request clarification or additional information about AI use when necessary to assess the originality, reliability, or integrity of a manuscript.

7. Confidentiality and Use of AI by Editors

Editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts, reviewer reports, editorial correspondence, and unpublished research information.

Editors must not upload confidential manuscript content or related editorial materials to external or public generative AI services when doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, personal data, or research integrity.

AI tools must not replace independent editorial judgment. Decisions concerning manuscript suitability, ethical compliance, peer review, acceptance, revision, or rejection remain the responsibility of the authorized human editor.

Any AI-assisted administrative activity must be conducted in a manner consistent with the journal's confidentiality requirements, applicable data protection obligations, and institutional policies.

8. Use of AI by Reviewers

Peer reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts and related materials received during the review process.

Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, substantial excerpts, unpublished data, r
