Receptive and Productive Vocabulary Exercises in Secondary School English Textbook

Abstract

English is becoming popular among teenagers, particularly on social media platforms. A strong vocabulary is crucial for effective use of languages. In the modern world, expanding one's vocabulary is crucial to learning a language, and this should begin in elementary school and continue through high school. English instruction heavily relies on textbooks. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis to review the exercises. The findings show that there is more focus on exercises that help students understand vocabulary, rather than exercises that help them use it actively. This could be the reason why learners' proficiency in English is lacking. Therefore, in order to improve vocabulary comprehension and usage, educators and students must become more conscious and modify their teaching strategies. This study still has limitations in terms of data sources and time, and it is hoped that future studies will use new and more concrete methods.
