Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasingly serious global health issue largely driven by the inappropriate use of antibiotics. The public’s lack of understanding regarding the proper use of antibiotics is one of the factors that increases the risk of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, health education initiatives aimed at improving public knowledge and awareness of the rational use of antibiotics are necessary as a preventive measure against AMR. This community service activity was conducted to improve the understanding of the residents of Bogeman Lor, Panjang Village, Magelang City, regarding the proper use of antibiotics and the impacts of antimicrobial resistance. The activity was carried out through health education sessions utilizing PowerPoint presentations, leaflets, sample antibiotic packaging, and interactive discussion sessions. Participants’ knowledge levels were assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments administered before and after the educational session. The activity took place on June 6, 2026, and was attended by 70 participants, including Posyandu cadres for toddlers and the elderly, as well as members of the general public. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge after attending the educational session. The average pretest score, which was initially 62.4, increased to 85.7 on the posttest, representing an increase of 23.3 points. In addition to this increase in knowledge, participants also demonstrated high levels of participation and enthusiasm throughout the activity. The majority of participants were able to understand the principles of rational antibiotic use, such as using antibiotics as prescribed by healthcare professionals, the importance of completing the full course of antibiotics as recommended, and avoiding the use of antibiotics for illnesses caused by viral infections. Based on the results of the program, it can be concluded that health education on rational antibiotic use is effective in improving public knowledge. Such educational programs have the potential to serve as a promotive and preventive strategy in reducing the risk of AMR in the community. Therefore, continuous educational activities need to be carried out to improve public health literacy and support the control of antimicrobial resistance in the future.
